Kids always want to know their grade. The catch is, I never tell them. I have them keep track of their own grades. In their handbooks, I gave the formula that I use to determine grades. I also went over this in class. But there always some kids that forget how to calculate them. So on this page, you can figure your grade out for any quarter. If for some reason your handbook is missing, click here to download a quarter grade sheet.
First of all, everything counts. Every homework assignment, quiz, test, lab, and even Question Of the Day (Q.O.D.) counts towards your average. Labs are also very important. At the end of each quarter, if any student is missing ANY LABS BY THE QUARTER DEADLINE, they AUTOMATICALLY get a 'F' for that quarter! Homework assignments are usually 2-5 pages from my note packets. They might be readings from a textbook, multiple choice questions, matching, vocabulary review, etc. These should take between 10-20 minutes to complete.
Quizzes are given in class and usually are 15-25 questions. There will be some Regents-style multiple choice and some Regents-style short-essay questions. These take around 20-25 minutes in class.
Tests are given in class and usually are 30-45 questions. There are both Regents-style multiple choice and short answer questions. These take a full period to complete.
The Question Of the Day (QOD) is asked almost every single day during the first 5 minutes of class. These never count against you and are strictly BONUS points! They are based on what the previous class was about. Students can monitor their point totals on the Q.O.D. board in class. You can earn up to 5 points right on your quarter average! There is no reason why students should not get at least 3 points EACH QUARTER if they do their homework from the night before!
IN ADDITION to your homework, we have labs. We average around 10 labs a quarter. If a student turns a lab in late, or had to correct it and then hand it in after they are due, they lose 1 point, FOR EACH INFRACTION. If one lab is missing in a quarter by the deadline, they will get an F for that quarter. OUCH! Students can also check on the boards in class to see how they are doing with their labs.
